Glossary

The designation 'SLT' stands for single lens translucent and it's the 'translucent' bit that's the key to what differentiates these new models both from conventional DSLRs and mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. The SLTs do have mirrors, but they're mirrors that let the majority of the light pass straight through to the sensor, rather than having to swing out of the way to allow exposure. As a result they are fixed in position, always reflecting a portion of the light emerging from the back of the lens onto a phase-detection AF array housed in the top of the camera.

Does it support lenses without the construction of its AF motor ?

Like the D3000 before it, the Nikon D3100 sports an AF-S lens mount, which lacks autofocus support for the older AF lenses whose focus mechanisms were driven from the camera. These lenses have what looks like a little screwdriver slot on their mounting flange that couples with a protruding, screwdriver-looking shaft on the camera body. A motor in the camera body is thus required to drive the lens mechanics to adjust focus.

Right before Photokina ,Olympus has announced the new line up of lenses for its Micro FourThird Armada which is respectively the Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm 1:4.8-6.7. Weighing only 430 grams, the Micro Four Thirds system lens' 18 element, 13 group design utilizes two Extraordinary Dispersion (ED) and 3 High Refractive (HR) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberration.
